  • The challenges of community intervention: the perspective of cultural intermediaries

Among the services offered by the Athena Shield network is the Cultural Intermediary (CI) service. These are women from different communities who have been trained on domestic and family violence and who work in collaboration with social workers with victims who speak neither French nor English.

Cultural mediators also do a lot of awareness-raising in their communities on topics still considered taboo. In this video, they describe the challenges and obstacles they face in their work with their respective communities and how they overcame these difficult moments to ultimately gain their trust and address the issues of domestic violence, family violence, and honor-based violence.

Breaking the silence surrounding these issues within communities is an important step in helping victims who suffer from such abuse.
